Unique Islands on the Planet



Apart from the normal coastal places in the world, and the much known islands, there are some places that have something unique in them. They can be termed as unique due to a variety of factors. They bear a distinctive feature from the rest of the islands in the world. Some of these islands are not only nestled on the ocean but also on the river. Here is a list of the most unique islands on the planet.

Ometepe, the oldest island in the world which has been formed from the eruptions of the volcano. This island is on the river of Nicaragua, based in the Republic of Nicaragua. The name is derived from the Nahuatl word of ome which means two and tepe which means mountain. The two volcanoes are Concepcion and Maderas. Although this is a very dangerous volcanic island, but there are about 35,000 people residing on the land. The majority of the population is practicing agriculture and breeding. This island is very famous in the region of Nicaragua.

Ometepe Island

Ellesmere is an uninhabited frozen island in the world, which reaches freezing temperatures. The island is located on the Canadian territory, situated exactly on the west of Greenland. It has a barren and mountainous nature and it poses to be a “laboratory” for the geologists and the biologists who study the changes in nature. It is amazing to find that even in the freezing temperature there are 146 people who reside on this island!

Ellesmere Island

The Azores is a beautiful remote volcanic island with various seasons in a day, and is located on the Atlantic Ocean. You don’t need a stove to cook your food here. You just need to dig the soil and place the pot and your food will be cooked within minutes! It is a volcanic archipelago located off the coast of Portugal. The weather in this island is bizarre. It changes so quickly with the flip of your lashes, that you will not be able to realize the change.

Java, known as the “island of the people” is one of the most densely populated islands in the world. The total population of the island is 125 million, which is truly remarkable! Java is a part of Indonesia, and it houses two of the mega cities, Jakarta and Surabaya. The island has spectacular scenery. It is nestled on the range which is sensitive to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. It is home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Borobudur.
