Galapagos is one of the most gorgeous islands on Earth. Perfectly positioned 1000 km away from the Ecuadorian mainland, Galapagos is essentially a bunch of 13 islands, out of which 7 are uninhabited.

Every year thousands of visitors arrive on the mystical land of Galapagos to explore the gorgeousness of the natural vistas and the animal life here. This small tourist population comprises of nature-lovers, travelers, and scientists. Scientists come to Galapagos every year to explore the secret of how this diminutive and remote island can possibly contain such a varied species of animals. However, it is still a mystery.

People have rarely heard about many animals found in this area. And if they know something about the wildlife here, it is probably due to various channels like National Geographic and Discovery. The island was initially occupied temporarily by pirates, refugees, and Incas, whose destination was some other location. Galapagos was used as a stop to sleep, relax, or hide.

One of the most famous and interesting animals found in this area is the Galapagos penguin. They are quite small compared to other species of penguins. They can mate and breed in any month of the year, provided they get ample of food supply.

Galapagos penguins are one of the smallest penguins around the world as its length ranges from 16 to 18 inches and weighs no more than 5-6 pounds. Along with its physical size, the breeding population too is very small having just around 1000 pairs worldwide. Few are found around the equator, while majority of them are toward the extreme north of the planet.

Although it can found in many parts of Galapagos Islands, almost 90% of them can be spotted in isles of Isabela and Fernandina. Their diminutive features are designed attractively by nature. A thin black line starts from the throat, encircles the head, and meets at the corners of their eyes. Their upper part especially head region is swathed with black color, while most of the lower part remains fair.

Most of the female penguins lay two eggs. Having no definite breeding season, they mate only when there is ample of food supply. However, keeping themselves cool is one of the major problem a Galapagos penguin faces. Many penguins are inhabited close to the equator and the temperature there generally goes up to 100 degrees F few hours after dawn. Hence, they have to immerse themselves in the cold water of Cromwell Current for most hours of the day. However, it becomes quite cold in the nights, which makes it possible for them to sleep on the land.

Holding their flippers out helps them to thrust heat out of their body. During daytime, when the land is hot, they position their flippers on their feet to protect themselves from sunburn.

Not quite lazy, but they don’t leave their archipelago for any reason. These tiny looking animals are relaxed and seem to be having fun, always. Quite similar to their physical feature is their diet quantity. They eat tiny fishes like sardines and mullet. However, they hardly go out, or rather go in the water for hunting. They expect ocean currents to drag small fishes toward the feeding area.

Around 20 years ago, harsh weather caused by El Nino resulted in severe lack of food, which killed around 70% of the total Galapagos penguins. The number is slowly increasing again. However, scientists still believe it is one of the endangered species on earth. Not much was known about Galapagos penguins due to its isolation from humans. However, after concluding similarities between these animals found in equator and north, scientists have now started conducting research on the nearest available penguins. Slowly but surely, many facts are being explored and revealed to the world.
