The French Polynesian Island of Moorea is western neighbour to Tahiti, located 18 kilometers away from it. It belongs to the Society Islands in the South Pacific Ocean.

Best time to visit

The Island of Moorea has a tropical climate and the cooler, comparatively drier season from November to April is when tourism peaks here.

How to Get to Moorea

Moorea is easily accessible once you reach the Island of Tahiti. There are regular flights as well ferries connecting the two. Ferris from Tahiti takes you the Vaiare Bay terminal on Moorea’s northeast coast. The Tahiti Island is easily accessible being a popular island destination. Flying time from Los Angeles to the Fa’aa International Airport, at Tahiti’s Capital Town of Papeete, is approximately 8 hours or so. The Island is well-connected with major international destinations like the United States of America and New Zealand. Once in Moorea, you can rent a moped or move around on foot as well to explore the Island by yourself.

Moorea Attractions

This South Pacific Island is known for its beaches and is more of a diving and snorkeling destination than anything else. Most of its tourists are those who come here for an excursion or day trip from Tahiti. Some of the well known beaches of this Island are the Temae Beach that’s on its east coast, the Pearl Beach, the Hauru Beach on the north western tip of this Island- a good site for water sports like sailing, kayaking, paragliding and snorkeling. The Linereva Beach and the Maatea beach are other good beaches here. On the north shore of the Island are the Cook’s Bay and the Opunohu Bay. The Atiha Bay is another scenic area of this French Polynesian Island.

There are about 20 dive sites here, most of them on the north of the Island. One of them is at Tiki on the northwestern coast of the Island, where the shallow and clear waters are the habitat of marine life like lemon sharks, black-tipped reef sharks and other species of tropical fishes. Humpback whales too can be spotted here during the nesting season in the months from August to October.

Hiking through its lush green tropical forests and waterfalls is another activity tourists come here for. One of the challenging routes here is the trail to the summit of Mount Rotui – 900 meters high, that separates the Cook’s Bay and the Opunohu Bay. The Paopao Valley too has a hiking trail. In Afareaitu you have the half-an-hour trail to Atiraa Waterfall. Opunohu Bay to Le Belvedere Lookout Point is another interesting trail of Moorea.

Some historical sites and cultural centers make for a good cultural tour of the Island. These include the Marae Titiroa – an ancient Polynesian stone temple site, the Village Cultural Center at Tiki that gives you as sense of the Moorean culture with displays of temple replicas, handicrafts and traditional forms of art and the 1891-built catholic church in the Haapiti settlement on the southwestern coast of the Island.

On the Island’s northern coast are many old fishing villages such as the Papetoai – also home to some historical landmarks like the Portestant Church – built in 1822 and said to be the oldest building in use in the South Pacific Islands. There are some small day trips you can make to offshore Islands like the Island of Villa Carolina and the Dream Island. The Moorea Island, overall, is a pretty Island in French Polynesia, for a small vacation and just the perfect spot if you seek to spend more time beneath the waters snorkeling or diving or by it on the long stretches of white and black sand beaches.

Night dives are popular here and arrangements can be made for the same.

One of the most popular beaches of the world, this is a major attraction for tourists of this South Pacific Island.

If hiking is what you enjoy, trek your way to Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia. These two are the remains of what once where active volcanoes. Both are in the center of Bora Bora. The 727-meters high Mount Otemanu is the highest peak of the Island of Bora Bora. For a cultural tour, walk along the coast, among the ancient marae temples.

End your trip with shopping. The shops here have souvenirs such as Bora Bora art and also international ones, pearls from Tahiti and wooden handicrafts.

The Islands of Yap lie in the western part of the North Pacific Ocean, in proximity to the Island of Palau.

Best time to visit

This diving destination has a maritime tropical climate, being close to the equator. Anytime is good to visit this Island which has an average annual temperature of about 27 degree Celsius.

How to reach

To reach here, you need to fly to Guam that has flights from countries like the United States of America, Australia, Tokyo and Manila. From here, the Continental Air Micronesia takes you to Yap. Private vessels too are sailed to this Island.

To get around the Island, you can hire a taxi, rent a car or get on to the public buses that ply here.

Attractions

Yap is indeed known for its diving site all around the world. However, that is not the only reason that travelers come to Yap for. There are a few more of them.

Let us look at what the divers can find on this Island. This is an activity you can enjoy throughout the year here. Manta Rays, about 200 different species of corals and reefs are just some of the underwater delights here. Sharks are another marine creatures here and there specially designated shark dives.

Underwater photography is at its best here, courtesy the clarity of waters. Yap is also a great destination for snorkeling. The manta mating season from December to mid-April is when the Island of Yap becomes all the more worth visiting as ever.

This Micronesian Island still has a traditional life and activities like sailing, fishing and weaving form an integral part of its economy. Yapese dance is also an attraction here and this along with other cultural elements of Yap can be seen on March 1 that is celebrated as the Yap Day.

Mountain-biking, kayaking and hiking to the some ancient stores here are other activities that you can get yourself engaged in this Micronesian Island of Yap.

The people here are warm and friendly. While it may take you sometime to open them up to you, once that’s done, they are more than ready to help you guide through Yap.

Yap Island is an attraction for divers and snorkelers. And for travelers who aren’t keen about water activities – Yap is worth exploring and wandering around. The simple pleasure of walking on a street not known before is a delight in itself.

Best time to visit

The Island experiences a mild Mediterranean climate. The best time to visit this Mediterranean Island is in the months from May and October, when it is warm and sunny here.

How to reach

To get here, you will need to get to the coast of Croatia and Dalmatia, from where there are regular ferries to this Island.

The nearest airport to Korcula Island is the Dubrovnik Airport, which is served by major airlines like the British Airways.

Attractions of Korcula Island

In Korcula, you will find some great Korcula beaches, like in other Islands and sites off the waters too, that is worth exploring and reflects its classic past.

The Island of Korcula is home to some fine pebble beaches such as the Przna Bay near Lumbarda, Orebic’s Beach and others.

The cities of this Island have some interesting sites to explore. In Korcula, the Island’s main city is the “old town” or the medieval walled city, at the upper north-east part, offering fantastic view of the surrounding Islands. The port here is one of the two main ports of the Island. This is said to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, the world-known traveler and the Venetian Merchant. His birthplace is a tourist attraction in the walled city.

You can also visit the museums like the Museum of Korcula and the Museum of Icons, centuries-old churches like the Sveti Nikola Church and the Badija Church and Monastery and galleries here. Some of the other monuments here are the Renaissance style Bishop Palace, the classic Gothic-Renaissance style Cathedral Sveti Marko,

West of Korcula is the city of Cara, the production center of the world-famous Posip wine. This is a tranquil town with a small market, a church and the sea just three kilometers away. Good for nature walks and cycling. Another Posip wine production center here is the Smokvica town, not far from the sea. Worth seeing here is an old church and the road to the south from here is the most beautiful section of the Island.

Further of korcula tourism to the southwest is the Brna port town which is vibrant in the tourist season. Boating, sailing and cycling along the south coast beach road here are other attractions of this place. Another beach town is Prizba, home to some beaches good for water sports, cycling routes and hiking.

West of Cara is Blato, with architectural delights like the main church and plaza. To the west of it is the port town of Vela Luka – an interesting area with a waterfront.

Other forms of entertainment here is the Moreska sword dance, performed every week. This famous folk dance of Mediterranean now thrives only in Korcula Island.

You can also go for excursions to some 50 smaller islets along the shores of this Island such as Hvar, which is also a vineyard.

This greenest Island of the Adriatic Sea is also a destination worth going to, if exploring the surf, and the turf in an Island is what you are planning to do.

Among the Greek Islands is the crescent shape Santorin archipelago, covering an area of about 73 square kilometers. The Island lies in the southern extreme among the Islands in the Cycladic group in the Aegean Sea.

Best time to visit

Santorini experiences Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Abundance of sunshine throughout the year favours tourists.

How to reach

To get to Santorini, you need to cross Athens. The flight from Athens to Santorini takes about 40 minutes. In summers, you can take the direct charter flights from cities in Europe and also from Thessalonki.

You can also take one of the ferries from the Piraeus, Thessalonki or Crete forts and from most of the Islands of Cycladic. In the summer months, when tourism peaks, there are high speed boats daily from these places that take you to Santorini in about 5 hours or so.

Attractions

For the best beaches on this Island, head to its east and southeast. Some of the good beaches here are the Baxedos Beach, Kolumbus Beach and the Pori Beach, which is also a port for the fishermen here.

Further in the southeast are the beaches of Monoliths, Avis – good for water sports and Kamari Beaches.

Also well-know are the Perissa Beach and the Perivolos Beach which together form the Island’s longest black-sanded beach.

The southernmost Vlychada beach is set against mountains that have been scenically shaped by strong winds since years together. Must visit here are Red Beach with vertical cliffs, the White Beach and the Mesa Pigadia Beach.

Hiking is another attraction of Santorini. The 3-hour hike of Fira, via Firostefani and Imerovigli to Oia is the longest hike here. En-route is some spectacular views of Caldera. The Imerovigli –Forostefani route and then to Fira makes for a good 30-minutes walk. Another good hike is the route from the Profitis IIias summit to the hill of Mesa Vouno, location of ancient Thera and further to Perissa.

The small islands of Caldera, Palea and Nea Kameni are testimony to the recent activity of the volcano.

A number of museums here are worth visiting. Located in Island’s Capital Fira, the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, with masterpieces from the prehistoric Aegean such as paintings and the unique gold figurine, deserves a visit. Other displays include the three dimensional life size reproductions of wall paintings from the ancient site of Akrotiri.

Other museums here are the Archaeological Museum, the Folklore Museum – a cave house built in 1861, the Megaron Gyzi that formally was a mansion; the Naval Museum in La, the Wine Museum, and the Art Space Museum that is a cultural center- cum-winery.

Another monument here is the Argyros Mansion, built recently, that reflects a fusion of the Theraic and neoclassic architecture and thereby offering you a glimpse of the cultural heritage of Greece.

The period furnishings as well as ceiling paintings are well-preserved here.

You shouldn’t miss out visiting the two archaeological site of the ancient city of Akrotiri – belonging to the pre-historic times and the ancient city of Mesa Vouno –a Greek civilization.

The Island is adorned by about 250 finely built architecture such as the Panagia Episkopi Church, the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral built in 1827, the Monastery of Prophet Elias dating back to the 18th century and the Catholic Church – a Baroque Church with an elegant bell tower, the Dominican convert and the Agios Mikolaos Monastery.

Other than sightseeing, you can also enjoy a number of water sports here and explore the villages around, all of which have a unique charm of their own.

With unique land formations, sunny beaches, historical monuments and the water sports that attract tourists to any Island, the Island of Santorini is great for a holiday, whether you want to spent some time by yourself wandering about or want to have a good time with your family.

The Central American Country of Costa Rica borders the Caribbean Sea to its east and the North Pacific Ocean to its south and west. From the North and the south-southeast, it is flanked by the countries of Nicaragua and Panama.

Best time to visit

The tropical Costa Rica is worth visiting anytime of the year, though the dry season from the months of December to April are more favourable among the tourists.

How to reach

The airports here such as the Capital San Jose’s Juan Santamaria International Airport and the Liberia’s Daniel Obuder International Airport are served by numerous airlines such as the Air Canada, Continental and Delta to name a few . From Europe, Iberia and Martin Air serve San Jose. Flights from most of the cities of the United States reach here in about 3-7 hours.

You can choose to travel to Costa Rica by car as well, after being well-guided about the route.

Attractions in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is makes for a pretty interesting destination for travelers. There are several Islands here such as the Cocos Island, the Calero Island – largest of the Islands here, the Cano Island surrounded by reefs and the Isla Tortuga known for its white-sandy beaches – a good snorkeling destination. You can have a nice time cruising in the Gulf of Nicoya and passing-by these Islands on a 13-mile sail.

Costa Rica certainly lives up to its name that means ‘rich coast’. Most of the beaches in the northwest corner – a part of the Santa Rosa National Park are good. October is worth visiting this part when the olive ridley sea turtles nest in here. The Guanacaste coast is full of deserted beaches such as the Playa Carrillo, Playa Samara, Playa Buena Vista and Playa Barrigona.

Another attractive beach is Playa Montezuma in the southern tip of Nicoya Peninsula stretching to miles, with waterfalls and the Cabo Blanco and the Curu wildlife preserves nearby. Malpais, Manuel Antonio and in the eastern coast of Costa Rica- the Punta Uva and the Manzanillo beaches are good too.

Surfing is popular among the tourists here, especially around the breaks of Guanacaste. The Central and Southern Pacific coasts are good from April to November.

The rivers of Pacuare, Reventazon, Blancas and Savegre offer some of the best white-water rafting sites of Costa Rica. For Boardsailing, its largest lake – Lake Arenal is good.

Costa Rica is good for hiking. Some of the routes worth trekking through are the Lankester Gardens – home to distinct flora species, the Rincon de la Vieja National Park – the volcanic park with sites like Blue Lake and Cangrejo Falls, the La Selva Biological Station located in the north-northeast of Costa Rica’s mountain ranges that slope towards the Caribbean, the Arenal National Park and around, the Monteverde Biological Cloud Forest Reserve, the Corcovado National Park – rainforest home to scarlet macaws and the Cahuita National Park with most of the ways parallel to the beach.

Other activities you can enjoy here includes Bungee Jumping from a small bridge over Rio Colorado, camping, canopy and canyon tours, horse-back riding and rock- climbing to name a few.

If you are planning for an adventurous holiday, think of Costa Rica. About 25 per cent of this Country’s area comes under protected national parks and protected areas. There are about 800 species of birds here.

With hiking trails, forests, a variety of wild life, beaches and mountains, Costa Rica certainly deserves consideration as an adventure destination.

The Grenada is a three Island State – consisting of Carriacou, Grenada and Petite Martinique, located in the eastern Caribbean, among the Windward Islands.

The Caribbean Islands or the West Indies with its over 3000 Islands of West Indies form the bridge between the Caribbean and the North Atlantic Ocean.

The Bahamas are in the north with over 3,000 individual islands and reefs. To the south of it are the Greater Antilles in the central West Indies that include countries of Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic (Hispaniola) and Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles in the Southeast are three of its main island groups. The latter are further divided into the Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands.

Best time to visit

Like in other Caribbean Islands, all of which experience a tropical climate, mid December to mid April is the peak tourist season here.

How to reach

Grenada is a well-connected destination with many airlines serving Grenada’s Point Salines International Airport.

Quite a number of major international airlines such as the American Airlines and Air France serve the Lamentin International Airport, Martinique. You might, however, need to catch a connecting flight to this Island from Puerto Rico or other Caribbean Islands like Antigua.

Many travelers are taking on the waterways on cruise, yacht or sailing to reach the Islands of Grenada. Fort de France, Martinique is a beautiful marina here.

To explore the Islands once here, you can rent a car, hire a tax, rent bikes or mopeds or hop on to the buses.

Attractions of Grenada

Grenada Island, with 133 square miles of area, is more mountainous and also the largest one among the three Islands. The 2,757 feet Mount Saint Catherine is the highest point here. Carriacou Island is known for its beaches.

Martinique is pretty much a cultural hub of French West Indies. Music, venue is already here and a vacation and bookings, that’s all you need to do is, get to Martinique and have nice time.

Martinique is home to characteristic beaches. For the white sandy beaches such as the Cap Chevalier and Plage de Salines, head down south. Those in the north like the Anse Ceron have black sand, sometimes in combination with white sand, testifying the volcanic birth of Martinique.

Rough shores with turbulent water adorn the eastern coast here, but some like Anse Azerot beach have calm waters great for swimming. Snorkelers and scuba divers can have a nice time exploring the sea beds here, especially around Anse Couleuvre, Anse Noir and Cap Chevalier. Martinique is worth a visit even off the shores. Walking on the roads here, you will cross spectacular terrains, art and history museums, historical sites like forts, botanical gardens for a nature walk and other interesting diversions.

Most of good beaches of Grenada are in its southwestern part which includes the Grand Anse Beach, the Morne Rouge, the Pink Gin Beach and the others. These beaches are excellent sites for water sports like snorkeling and diving.

The other spectacular beaches here are the Pearl’s Beach and the Levera Beach that is a part of the Levera National Park, in the northern parts of Grenada, facing the Atlantic Ocean.

Other activities you can get involved in here includes sailing, diving- at sites like Glover Island and the Bianca C., participate in the Yacht-racing events and go deep-fishing.

Apart from these water-related activities, there are plenty of hiking trails that you will be tempted to trek on to. These include the Grand Etang National Park and Forest Reserve which is also a bird sanctuary in Grenada, the harbour-city of St. George and other trails.

These hiking trails also include scenic waterfalls like the Annandale Falls near St. George and the Seven Sisters Falls a few miles ahead.

It would be interesting to plan your Grenada vacations around many of its carnivals and festivals, such as the Maroon Music Festival of Big Drum dancing held on the Island of Carriacou.

So with national parks, around 40 interesting beaches, scenic waterfalls, vibrant festivals, water activities and towns worth exploring, the Island is definitely worth considering for a laid-back, or active Caribbean vacation for all kind of tourists.
