With an area of about 24,090 square kilometers, the Island of Sardinia is the second largest Island of the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily. This Island has a regional autonomy, though geographically, it is a part of Italy.
With a Mediterranean climate, the Island is ready to welcome tourists through the year, though the peak season here is that of summer – lasting from the month of June to August. This is when the water conditions are just right to allow good surfing and August is also a festive season here when Italians head to Sardinia.
Sardinia has three international airports – the Alghero Airport, Olbia–Costa Smeralda Airport and the Cagliari-Elmas Airport that have flights from Italian and European destinations like Scandinavia, Spain, Germany, United Kingdom.
It is also connected to the mainland by ferries. Some of the Sardinian ports are the Porto Torres, Olibia, Golfo Aranci, Arbatax, Santa Teresa Gallura, Palau and Cagliari.
In the Island, you have public buses and a good railway system, or you can hire a car or any other vehicle to get around by yourself.
The natural beauty of this Island is one major reason for tourists to plan there vacation here. Portobello, Cagliari, Sant Elmo with its rock formations, Torresalinas, Geremeas, Villasimius, Chia, Pula, San Teodoro and Costa Smeralda are few of the fine beaches of Sardinia. With crystal clear and shallow waters, they are good for water-activities like swimming and other water sports.
The 2000 kilometers of coastline offer some great waters for windsurfing and kite-surfing. With caves, shipwrecks and an interesting marine life like the dolphins, diving is another popular activity of this Island. Some good sites here for diving are in the waters of Villasimius, Capo Carbonara, Cala Cipolla – the seven granite rock reefs, Capo Caccia – with its cave and tunnel systems and stalactites formation and the Archipels of La Maddalena National Park – home to reefs and sea weeds.
The Island has about 300 known caves and grottoes and many more await discovery. In Sardinia Italy tourism, so you must take a guided tour to these caves. Some of the significant ones here are the Neptune’s grotto, Grotta Verde- with rock formations, Grotta di Ispinigoli – home to stalactites formations up to 38 meters high and the Grotta del Bue Marino – known after the Mediterranean monk seal found today only on the Sardinian coast.

Adding another dimension to this Island’s landscape are its mountains. The Gennargentu mountain and the other mountains here are also home to wild life that include forests of cork oak, maquis and arbutus forests which are home to Sardinian deer, wild pigs, wild cats, falcons, kites and black vultures among others.
Also the attractions of Sardinia are the its only natural lake – the Lago Baratz near Argentiera, ponds and lagoons and rivers that flow down the magnificent mountains like the Flumendosa river and Tirso river.
The Island has underground springs as well in its grottoes and caves that also form waterfalls.
Hiking through the landscape of the Island of Sardinia can in fact be a good way of discovering this Mediterranean Island. Hiking possibilities are innumerable here. Motorboat excursions and horse-back riding are other activities you can get involved in here.
The Island of Sardinia has villages that take you on a journey of different landscapes and cultures, enchanting you throughout.
