Kos is located in the center of the Dodecanese chain of islands in the Aegean Sea near the Turkish Coast. Kos Island is long and thin, with a coastline of 112 kilo meters. The pristine beaches of Kos, have been a source of revenue in the way of tourism for the inhabitants, since almost half a century.

Although the beautiful sandy beaches that stretch for long distances are the main tourist magnet, Kos is also home to some of the best archeological excavation sites located in the Mediterranean. The Beaches in Kos

The beaches in Kos have immaculate sands and crystal clear waters. Facilities are also extremely good.  The beaches on the east coast of Kos are more crowded as they are popular with the package tour operators. The beaches in the south have soft sands stretching for seemingly infinite distances. The north of Kos Island has relatively fewer numbers of beaches, and the beaches are a lot peaceful too.

Mastichari Beach

Mastichari beach gets its name from the village of the same name, where it is located. Mastichari is about 3 kilo meters far from Antimachia and about 27 kilo meters from Kos Town.

The beach is lined with a lot of tavernas and restaurants. There are also excellent accommodation options at the beach or in the surrounding village area.

Thermes Beach

Thermes beach is about 12 kilo meters away from Kos. The pebbled Thermes is a favorite with not only foreigners, but the Greeks themselves. The roads that lead upto Thermes are in really good condition, you can drive up, ride a bicycle here. Parking space is provided at Thermes. There are also several bus routes that ply near Thermes.

Paradise beach

Paradise beach is located 30 kilo meters south of Kos Town. It is an especially beautiful beach and is a popular favorite, particularly in summer.

Kardamena Beach

Kardamena beach is 30 kilo meters far to the North West of Kos town. It is situated on the west coast of Kos in Kardamena Village. The beach starts at the village port.

Karadamena is one of the busiest beach resorts in Kos, and is well organized, with some excellent facilities and accommodation options.

Psilos Gremos Beach

Marmari Limnara Beach

An excellent example of the typical Hellenistic altars, The Altar of Dionysus is located at a stone’s throw away from the Aghora. The altar dates back to 2nd Century B C.

Asklepieion

Asklepieion is the best known ancient monument of Kos. It is located at about 3.5 kilo meters drom Kos Town, in the Panaghia of Tarsos.

The monument sits on a hillside, and a great view can be had of the sea along with the Asia Minor coasts.

The Neratzia Castle (Castle of Kos)

The Neratzia castle is a 14th century fortress built to strengthen defense at the entrance of the port in Kos.

Hippocrates’ plane tree

Located in front of the Knights Castle, this perennial tree is subject to many legends and stories; one of them being that the Apostle Paul spread his message here in 1st century A D. The tree has a perimeter of above 10 meters and is more than 1000 years ago.

Besides these, there are several other places to see, including The Archaeological Museum of Kos, the Ancient Agora of Kos, the Odeon of Kos and Ancient churches and monasteries.

How to get there

Daily flights are held from Athens Airport. From May to October many charter airlines fly directly to Kos, from many cities in Europe. Kos can also be reached via ferry from the Turkish coasts.

The Agistri has a multitude of hidden coves and beaches and tiny islands around it, A boat ride around Agistri would be an excellent way of discovering Agistri better.

Magiza beach

The climate in the whole of the sheltered Saronic Gulf is characterized by dry winters and cloudless summers.

The summer season is from June to August. In May and September, there is a probability of rain.

Getting to Agistri

Agistri has no airports. The route favored by most travelers is getting down at Athens International Airport, traveling by cab or bus to Piraeus port, and take a ferry to Agistri.

There are several excellent reasons why Lesvos is the ultimate destination. Its pristine beaches are one, and the extremely diverse flora and fauna is another. The Beaches

Lesvos has a large number of beaches, diverse in all aspects. Some are more visited than the others, while several have water sports and other activities.

The beaches that are most visited are collected on the north coasts, while the south coast beaches are relatively isolated.

Skala Eressos

Situated on the southwestern end of Lesvos is the beach town of Skala Eressos. This beach has been described as one of the best beaches in the whole of Greece and is a popular destination for honey mooners and other tourists.

Tavari

Tavari is situated below Mesotopos. This beach is remains relatively uncrowded, until the arrival of Athenians in August.

Antissa

This beach is very secluded and mostly empty always. It is a rocky beach with sand some meters into the sea. A turtle pond is nearby too.

Petrified Forest

The Petrified Forest was formed due to the eruption of Mt Ordymnos about 20 million years ago. The trees in this region were covered with hot ash. Over the years, due to geographical activity, the trees in the forest were turned to stone. The Petrified Forest in Lesvos is larger than the one in the Amazon. It is on the way to Sigri.

The Bath Springs

Lesvos is dotted with several hot thermal springs which are said to have medicinal properties. Bath houses have been built around them. Many ailments are said to be cured, including arthritis, rheumatism, kidney and gall stones, bronchitis and sciatica. Many neurological, dermatological and gynecological problems have also been cured.

Bird watching

Lesvos comes in the migration routes for European birds flying from Africa. This is a main stop for these birds. An amazing variety of local birds can also be seen. In the spring, the entire island is filled with large varieties of wild birds. Species such as Cretzschmars bunting, Bee-eater, Red-footed Falcon, Kruper’s nuthatch, Rupell’s warbler, Hoopoe are to be seen here. Flamingoes and Avocets are also to be seen.

Historical Monuments

Historical monuments here are many. Castles, Aqua ducts, ancient churches and temples, all stand in testimony to Lesvos glorious past.

The Beach

There are two exceptionally beautiful white sand beaches on the Island. Anakena lies to the northern side of the island and is known for its excellent “shorereak surfing”.

The second island is a “hidden gem” called Ovahe. The main attraction of this beach are the breathtaking cliffs.

The inhabited islands in Lakshadweep are Agatti, Amini, Kalpeni, Chetlat, Andrott, Kadmat, Kiltan, Kavaratti, Bitra and Minicoy. Out of all the islands, only Bangaram and Kadamat are open for tourists. The islands are covered with pristine coral sand. These are the only coral islands in India, and are formed by the process of gradual taking in of calcium from the water by corals and building reefs.

Kadmat Island

Kadmat Island is 8km long and 550 m wide at its widest point. The scuba diving center is much visited by water sports aficionados throughout the world. There is a good variety of fishes like sharks and rays, and excellent clear water with visibility upto 20-50 m visibility.

Bangaram Island

Bangaram Island is a small island situated next to Kavaratti. Bangaram is not inhabited and this is the only uninhabited island resort in Lakshwadeep. Bangaram is the perfect place to recharge your batteries, and getaway from the rat race for some time. At night, luminescent plankton that is washed up on the beach gives a light blue glow to the coral sands, creating a totally magnificent effect. To reach this island one has to travel by boat or helicopter from Agatti Island.

Other things to do

There is plenty of yachting, scuba diving, snorkeling, sunbathing, swimming, pedal boating, canoeing and kayaking in Lakshadweep. Apart from these, there is a light house and a Marine museum.

How to get there

There are two ways of reaching Lakshadweep from the Indian mainland, namely, by air and by sea

By Air

There are flights operating six days a week from Cochin International Airport, Kerala to Agatti, which is the only airport in Lakshadweep. Helicopter transfers have been made available from Agatti to select destinations. It takes approximately 90 minutes to reach Agatti from Cochin (also known as Kochi).

By Sea

Currently, there are four passenger ships operating between Cochin and Lakshadweep. The total time duration of the passage is between 14 to 10 hours. These ships do not operate during the Monsoon season (extending from 15th May to October 15th)

The snowmobile is a sled, which is a vehicle used for winter travel on snow. This vehicle is designed to be operated in ice and snow and does not require any road or trail.

The most exotic cuisine of this place is the local cuisine. Due to the extreme cold weather, meat is the preferred food component. The yak or the wild dear’s meat is something which is considered to be a delicacy here. Also, multicuisine will be available in your lodge.

Some tips

It is recommended that you carry enough warm clothes so that you can feel comfortable. If you are trying to venture into this place during the winters, make sure you carry heavy woolens. Almost all the rooms in the lodge have a fireplace, so you can relax in the evenings. Please do not venture into any place without assistance.
