Famous as the birth place of Hippocrates, Kos Island, Greece has been a popular destination with tourists since the nineteen sixties. Kos was one of the first Greek Islands to open its doors to tourism and welcome tourists in a big way. Although Kos was and still is the favored destination next to Rhodes for the package tourists, a discerning island traveler will find many things to see that still distinguishes Kos from the other Greek Islands.

Kos is located in the center of the Dodecanese chain of islands in the Aegean Sea near the Turkish Coast. Kos Island is long and thin, with a coastline of 112 kilo meters. The pristine beaches of Kos, have been a source of revenue in the way of tourism for the inhabitants, since almost half a century.

Although the beautiful sandy beaches that stretch for long distances are the main tourist magnet, Kos is also home to some of the best archeological excavation sites located in the Mediterranean. Also while in Kos, you can cross over to Turkey and spend the day sightseeing or shopping. You can hop to the nearby islands too.

The Beaches in Kos

The beaches in Kos have immaculate sands and crystal clear waters. The beaches in the south have soft sands stretching for seemingly infinite distances. The north of Kos Island has relatively fewer numbers of beaches, and the beaches are a lot peaceful too.

Mastichari Beach

Mastichari beach gets its name from the village of the same name, where it is located. Mastichari is about 3 kilo meters far from Antimachia and about 27 kilo meters from Kos Town.

The beach is lined with a lot of tavernas and restaurants. There are also excellent accommodation options at the beach or in the surrounding village area.

Thermes Beach

Thermes beach is about 12 kilo meters away from Kos. The pebbled Thermes is a favorite with not only foreigners, but the Greeks themselves. The roads that lead upto Thermes are in really good condition, you can drive up, ride a bicycle here. Parking space is provided at Thermes. There are also several bus routes that ply near Thermes.

Marmari Limnara Beach

The island Agistri is located in the Argo Saronic Gulf in Piraeus Prefecture of Greece. At only 13 sq kms in area, Agistri is the smallest of the Saronic Islands, Agistri, covered with pines, this island has been famous for tourism only in the very recent years, and thus has retained its immaculate beauty. Agistri is not yet fully developed, and makes for the perfect idyllic location for island travelers requiring seclusion and complete peace and quiet, if lack of facilities is not a problem. The island has very few cars; horse carts are used. Night life is also non existent, except maybe in the few resort hotels.

The Beaches

The Agistri has a multitude of hidden coves and beaches and tiny islands around it, A boat ride around Agistri would be an excellent way of discovering Agistri better.

Megalochori and Skala are the beaches that are more famous among the travelers, and have facilities. The gorgeous Aponissos beach is well known for its beauty.

Aponissos beach

The loveliest beach in Agistri is located in the west coast. It is 8 kilo meters far from Megalochori. This is a really great place to swim, and is surrounded by greenery.

Megalochori beach

Also known as Mylos, Megalochori is one of the main beaches of Agistri. It is partly developed, and has facilities. The beach has a lot of taverns, restaurants, ouzeries and bars. The local bus route that connects Megalochori to Skala can be used to reach this beach.

Skala beach

Skala beach is extremely popular and is equipped with excellent facilities. It is a perfect location for families, and the shallow and clear blue waters are suited for children. The accommodation options are also numerous and several tavernas and restaurants are lined on the beach. Skala beach is 2 kilo meters east of Megalochori.

Skiliri beach

The Skiliri beach is a good option for adventure lovers, and is well connected by good roads. The beach terrain is rocky and step in some areas, and although is not as secluded as the other beaches, nor as frequented by families, Skiliri is a suitable destination for those looking for a change of scene.

Magiza beach

The Magiza beach is a remote beach about 7 kilo meters from Megalochori and is isolated and a perfect place to be away from the crowds.

Climate

The climate in the whole of the sheltered Saronic Gulf is characterized by dry winters and cloudless summers.

The summer season is from June to August. In May and September, there is a probability of rain.

Lesvos, the third largest Greek Island is relatively unknown by the large hordes of tourists that populate other Greek islands. This makes it a perfect island destination for discerning travelers. The mountainous island is till now unspoiled and is the best way to get closer to the traditional Greece.

There are several excellent reasons why Lesvos is the ultimate destination. Its pristine beaches are one, and the extremely diverse flora and fauna is another. Apart from these the island has several castles from The Middle Ages, excellent museums and amazing sea food. The people are warm and friendly as all Greeks are.

If all this is not incentive enough, let me say that a visit to Lesvos will cost you very less as compared to the other ‘popular /populous’ islands in Greece. So you are actually getting more for less.

The Beaches

Lesvos has a large number of beaches, diverse in all aspects. Some are more visited than the others, while several have water sports and other activities.

The beaches that are most visited are collected on the north coasts, while the south coast beaches are relatively isolated.

Skala Eressos

Situated on the southwestern end of Lesvos is the beach town of Skala Eressos. This beach has been described as one of the best beaches in the whole of Greece and is a popular destination for honey mooners and other tourists.

Skala Eressos beach is extremely beautiful. The vast expanse of sand is splendid. The town is also modernized and makes a comfortable stay. Also this is where you get the best sardines, and very cheaply too.

Molyvos

Molyvos is the tourist capital of Lesvos. It is a progressive town, but rooted in tradition. A calm and shallow sea and sandy beach here make it a hot favorite, There is snorkeling and diving opportunities also nearby.

Eftalou

Eftalou beaches are pretty near Molyvos and are near the famous hot springs, considered by many to have medicinal values. There are mainly pebble beaches and good restaurants.

Tavari

Tavari is situated below Mesotopos. This beach is remains relatively uncrowded, until the arrival of Athenians in August.

Antissa

This beach is very secluded and mostly empty always. It is a rocky beach with sand some meters into the sea. A turtle pond is nearby too.

Nature

Apart from hanging out at the beaches, if you like nature, plants, birds and animals, you have a treasure trove of all of the above in Lesvos. There are large varieties of plants and animals to be found here.

Petrified Forest

The Petrified Forest was formed due to the eruption of Mt Ordymnos about 20 million years ago. The trees in this region were covered with hot ash. Over the years, due to geographical activity, the trees in the forest were turned to stone. The Petrified Forest in Lesvos is larger than the one in the Amazon. It is on the way to Sigri.

The Bath Springs

Lesvos is dotted with several hot thermal springs which are said to have medicinal properties. Bath houses have been built around them. Many ailments are said to be cured, including arthritis, rheumatism, kidney and gall stones, bronchitis and sciatica. Many neurological, dermatological and gynecological problems have also been cured.

Bird watching

Lesvos comes in the migration routes for European birds flying from Africa. This is a main stop for these birds. An amazing variety of local birds can also be seen. In the spring, the entire island is filled with large varieties of wild birds. Species such as Cretzschmars bunting, Bee-eater, Red-footed Falcon, Kruper’s nuthatch, Rupell’s warbler, Hoopoe are to be seen here. Flamingoes and Avocets are also to be seen.
Sailing

Sailing around the island is a perfect way to spend your time and to get to know the locale, the coast and the bays.

Historical Monuments

Historical monuments here are many. Castles, Aqua ducts, ancient churches and temples, all stand in testimony to Lesvos glorious past.

The castles at Molyvos, Mytilini and Sigri are note worthy and are from the Byzantine era. Roman Aquaduct at Moria is another impressive attraction. The Christian temple of Chalinados, the bridge at Kremasti are others. The remains of the Ancient Pyrra, one of the five ancient cities of Lesvos are also worth a visit.

Truly Lesvos is a veritable paradise. Lesvos can give you the perfect mixture of historical sites, beaches and flora and fauna.

Spend a magnificent vacation in the Canouan Island, which is a part of the Grenadines Islands. Being one of the islands in the Caribbean Island, the Canouan offers breathtaking views and colors that soothe everyone’s eyes. The island belongs to St Vincent and is actually a tiny island, which measures only 3.5-miles by 1.25-miles.

People first settled in Canouan for thousands of years ago, and this small island was occupied by the European powers recently. In the year 1979, the island became independent with a democratic government. It is in the recent years, where the island has seen massive growth as a tourist destination. Today, the island welcomes huge number of foreign visitors, who throng to explore and enjoy their time with its pristine beaches and leisure activities. Along the Atlantic side of the island, you can see a barrier reef running.

While exploring the island, visit its highest point, which is the amazing Mount Royal. You can enjoy the activities like hiking at this site and see the spectacular Canouan Island from Mount Royal. The island also boasts two bays named as Glossy and Friendship, which then divide the southern side of the Island. Considering the exact location of Canouan Island, it lies at a distance of about 25 miles towards the south of St. Vincent. This island, from the year 1871 to the year 1969 was a fraction of the British colony of the Windward Islands.

The island offers a peaceful landscape along with tropical vegetation, and also many powder-soft beaches where you can spend some quality time. In fact, the island offers a relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy a leisurely mode of life. The island also offers huge variety of landscape, along with secluded bays, delightful expanses of unspoiled beaches, and lovely green hills. Head towards the Atlantic side of the island and you will experience an expansive coral reef, which offers protection and also scuba diving activity where divers love to visit.

The Canouan Island is an ideal tourist destination for the nature lovers, who look for a secluded encounter with the nature, and also complete natural scenes that are kept untouched. This delightful island never fails to tempt the visitor, and offers nearly magical views of sapphire-emerald waters that could be found gliding over the coral to lap at the peaceful beaches. You will be lucky enough to see the local fishermen who bring their everyday catch of tuna, parrotfish, and grouper. Sailing at this island is a truly memorable experience. You can enjoy the favorable wind and the water conditions, which offer a cherished experience.

The main harbour of this island is the Charlestown Bay. However, the Rameau Bay of this island offers a picturesque and wonderful harbour for yachts and catamarans, along with the Corbay that lies slightly towards the northern direction. The island is also a home to the recently built airport that can accommodate aircrafts like the ones, which are used by the Caribbean airlines. If you are looking for a Caribbean hotel, then enjoy the luxury Caribbean resort of the Raffles Canouan. This is an ideal choice to be satisfied. The resort offers lavish accommodation to visitors coming to spend their vacation in the Canouan Island.

The Easter Islands are known to be the “isolated islands on Earth”. The early settlers on the island called the island as “Te Pito O Te Henua” which means Navel of the World. The island lies on the Pacific Ocean in Polynesia.

The island is known for its famous “enigmatic giant busts” which were built centuries ago”. These figures reflect the culture and the “dramatic rise and fall of the most isolated Polynesian culture”.

Attraction

The main tourist attraction in the area is the Moai. The Moai are archaelogical features which should be treated with care because they are far more fragile than they seem. Often the Moai is placed upon ceremonial platforms and burials which are known as the “Ahu”. Walking on the Ahu is considered to be a disrespectful gesture.

The places where you can visit for free are found mostly on the coastline of the island. There are two amazing volcanic craters situated on the island – the Rano Kau and the Rano Raraku. The Rano Raraku is a slightly inland quarry where the Moai carvings were believed to be originated from. This volcanic crater is said to have provided the stones for the great figures.

Whereas Rano Kau is the “remains of a volcanic cinder cone” and is filled with freshrainwater and also boasts a “mottled unearthly appearance” which is simply mindblowing.

The Beach

There are two exceptionally beautiful white sand beaches on the Island. Anakena lies to the northern side of the island and is known for its excellent “shorereak surfing”.

The second island is a “hidden gem” called Ovahe. The main attraction of this beach are the breathtaking cliffs.

Major activities in the area

The major activities in the area is scuba diving and snorkeling. The popular spots are known as the Motu Nui and Motu Itu. Another major attraction of this place is the extensive cave system. There are a couple of caves which are very interesting and most of them are found near Ana Kakenga. The caves are strewn with lava eruptions which took place some years back probably.

Accommodation

There are many places where you can find accmmodation. There are a couple of lodges and resorts in the area.

Dining

Trying out the local cuisine is a must. The most Chilian food is a must try out.

The Easter Island is known for being the most isolated and one of the most beautiful islands in the world. It is worth visiting the place.

Lakshadweep is an island which is a union territory under India. Although the literal translation of the word Lakshadweep means “hundred thousand islands” in Malayalam, a total of 36 isles exist in this archipelago and only 10 are inhabited. These islands, filled coral reefs and laden with exotic palms, have been popular with tourists for quite sometime. Some excellent and developed diving is mostly the reason for this. Water sports are dominant over here.

The inhabited islands in Lakshadweep are Agatti, Amini, Kalpeni, Chetlat, Andrott, Kadmat, Kiltan, Kavaratti, Bitra and Minicoy. Out of all the islands, only Bangaram and Kadamat are open for tourists. The islands are covered with pristine coral sand. These are the only coral islands in India, and are formed by the process of gradual taking in of calcium from the water by corals and building reefs.

Kadmat Island

Kadmat Island is 8km long and 550 m wide at its widest point. In the western side, there is an excellent lagoon that is ideal for all kinds of water sports. There is a water sports school here and water skiing apparatus, kayaks, glass bottomed and pedal boats are available on rent. The scuba diving center is much visited by water sports aficionados throughout the world. There is a good variety of fishes like sharks and rays, and excellent clear water with visibility upto 20-50 m visibility.

Bangaram Island

Bangaram Island is a small island situated next to Kavaratti. Bangaram is not inhabited and this is the only uninhabited island resort in Lakshwadeep. Bangaram is the perfect place to recharge your batteries, and getaway from the rat race for some time. At night, luminescent plankton that is washed up on the beach gives a light blue glow to the coral sands, creating a totally magnificent effect. To reach this island one has to travel by boat or helicopter from Agatti Island.

Other things to do

There is plenty of yachting, scuba diving, snorkeling, sunbathing, swimming, pedal boating, canoeing and kayaking in Lakshadweep. Apart from these, there is a light house and a Marine museum.

How to get there

There are two ways of reaching Lakshadweep from the Indian mainland, namely, by air and by sea

By Air

There are flights operating six days a week from Cochin International Airport, Kerala to Agatti, which is the only airport in Lakshadweep. Helicopter transfers have been made available from Agatti to select destinations. It takes approximately 90 minutes to reach Agatti from Cochin (also known as Kochi).

By Sea

Currently, there are four passenger ships operating between Cochin and Lakshadweep. The total time duration of the passage is between 14 to 10 hours. These ships do not operate during the Monsoon season (extending from 15th May to October 15th)

Accommodation

There are several resorts and tourist homes managed by SPORTS and several private companies.

Important

Consumption of alcoholic beverages is only allowed in Bangaram. Do not pick up corals as this is punishable by law.

Climate

The climate is variable and is warm most of the year and is mildly warm from November to February.

The Banks Island is “one of the larger members of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago”. This island is situated in the Inuvik Region in the Northwest Territories of Canada.

This island is separated to the east by the Victoria island, from the mainland by the Prince of Wales Strait and from the south by the Amundsen Gulf.

This island is considered to be the 24th largest island in the world and the fifth largest island in Canada. The most interesting fact about this island is that only the Sachs Harbour or Ikhuak is the only settlement on the island. The island is said to be treeless with only the tallest plant, the “Arctic Willow” which grows occassionally to about “the height of a person’s knee but usually standing no taller than 10cm”.

About the island

There are two federal Migratory Bird Sanctuaries on the island which were founded in the year 1961. This island is a part of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and had a population of about 114 in the year 2001. This island is a home to almost about “two-thirds of the world’s population of lesser snow geese”. Also, Barren ground Caribou, polar bears, muskoxen and birds like robin and swallows.

Accommodation

There are 2 lodges in the area. These are ideally the places where you can stay. Due to the intense cold during the winters, it is hardly possible for humans to survive on the island.

Activities to do on the island

There are a number of activities which you can do on the island. Sightseeing, camping, snowmobiling and the boat trips are some of the popular activities which you can indulge in. Also, if you are enthusiastic about outdoor camping, you must go in for the Banks Island Tundra Tours.

The Western Arctic Hunting is a guided tour where you can go and hunt for polar bear and muskox. For this, you need to book the tour three months in advance.

Snowmobiling is the other activity which you can do here. This is the most exciting activity which you can do when there’s enough snow on the ground! The snowmobile is a sled, which is a vehicle used for winter travel on snow. This vehicle is designed to be operated in ice and snow and does not require any road or trail.

Dining

The most exotic cuisine of this place is the local cuisine. Due to the extreme cold weather, meat is the preferred food component. The yak or the wild dear’s meat is something which is considered to be a delicacy here. Also, multicuisine will be available in your lodge.

Some tips

It is recommended that you carry enough warm clothes so that you can feel comfortable. If you are trying to venture into this place during the winters, make sure you carry heavy woolens. Almost all the rooms in the lodge have a fireplace, so you can relax in the evenings. Please do not venture into any place without assistance.

The Banks Island is a truly remarkable place to be in with your family both in the winters and the summers. An amazing tourist location.
